Day One. A Show That Never Should Have Been Cancelled [Part 3/5]

The Dresden Files

This show’s cancellation is still a mystery to me. According to various sources, the reason for Sci Fi’s canclation of The Dresden Files could be because of budget reasons, because of ratings, because of the name/brand change over to SyFy, because the network president didn’t like where the show was headed, because the writers were all threatening to quit, because of a lawsuit by WB for copying Harry Potter and the strangest of all, because it drew in a female audience and not a male audience. Whatever the case, this is one show that I truly believe could have grown had they decided to keep it and would have fit in nicely with SyFy’s current line up.

The story follows Harry Dresden, a Private Investigator who just also happens to be a real Wizard. He deals in cases specifically involving the supernatural, which sometimes coincide with the police department and Lieutenant Murphy who doesn’t believe in Magic but still considers Harry to be a valuable consultant. However, the two worlds start to collide more then the two would like and dark secrets start to emerge.

Although the series would probably just anger fans of the original book series for it’s complete lack of loyalty to the books, I don’t mind at all. The characters are great, the story and world is very intriguing, the unique twists on old ideas (a hockey stick as a wand? Brilliant!) and the gritty atmosphere of the series makes it feel different from any other show currently airing on SyFy, let alone any other network. It’s just a shame they never bothered to give this show a chance past it’s first season.
